The Pristine Veneer

Gotta do whatever it takes to keep up the pristine veneer.

I think I understand what they were trying to do when they designed the hospital to feel more like a shopping mall, but sometimes the incongruity is just too close to the surface.

is this proving to be helpful to the patients or more upsetting? I can't decide how I feel about it!

Not sure how it is for those patients who are there just for tests and everything. I was there helping a loved one who was there for tests, and found it a bit noisy. On the other hand, I've visited others who were there for prolonged stays and they said they liked having somewhere to go that was still inside the hospital but didn't feel like a hospital environment. I can see that such a thing would be a comfort. I know there have also been times when I spent many hours accompanying someone at this hospital. Having a place to sit and have dinner, walk around and clear the head, etc., was nice. The live music was less my thing, though. I don't quite know why it was different for me, but it did feel different.
